Moving on From Cancer: A Day-long Wellness Retreat

Haven of Hope is pleased to announce a partnership with the Yoga on High Foundation to present a day-long retreat at Yoga on High Teacher Training Institute called, Moving on from Cancer.
Participants will experience a day full of gentle and restorative yoga, reiki, reiki training (including self-reiki), aromatherapy, and lunch. This retreat is a follow-up to a weekend retreat that was held last fall. A video montage of that retreat is available on the Haven of Hope Twitter page (@HOHCF).

FOLLOW-UP: ADVANCED BREAST CANCER SEMINAR

We had a great turn-out for the Advanced Breast Cancer educational program last night. This program was geared specifically to women with metastatic/advanced breast cancer, an often under-served population in the breast cancer community.
Drs. Slam and Rivello, spoke on how the medical community is using new ways of looking at surgery and the utilization of radiation, respectively, in the treatment of advanced breast cancer. Dr. Moore delivered some updates on targeted therapies and what’s new in clinical trials. Social worker, Ami Peacock, stressed the importance of “honoring oneself” when coping and dealing with this disease.
The inspiration of the evening was young survivor, Marci, who shared her story and personal journey with the group. Her positive spirit and attitude offered others strength for the healing journey…

FALL Walking Club
Fall Walking Club commenced at the end of September just in time for the cooler weather. This season’s walking club has a fun new way to track their efforts. Walking Club participants use a weekly walking log to track the number of minutes or steps they take each day. Every Wednesday they hang leaves on our Walktober Tree with other participants to see what they have accomplished.
Leaf Color Code Key
Green: 15-20 min or 1,000-3,000 steps
Red: 21-40 min or 3,000-5,000 steps
Orange: 41-60 min or 5,500-8,000 steps
Gold: 61+min or 8,000-10,000 steps
October is FOOD TRUCK month!
Every Tuesday in October, a different food truck will be parking in the lot of the Zangmeister Cancer Center for lunch. These trucks have very GENEROUSLY agreed to donate 10% of their lunch proceeds that day to Haven of Hope. Win-win! If you are in the area of 670 and N Cassady on Tuesdays, stop by and grab a bite to eat. Trucks will in the lot 11am-1:30pm.

MACY’S Shop for a Cause Fundraiser-lots of fun!
On Saturday, August 25th, our executive director had the opportunity to display HOH information at the entrance of Hayden Run Macy’s as a part of their Shop for a Cause event. What a wonderful event! Non-profits and charities like HOH had the opportunity to sell 1-day 25% off passes to their contacts for $5 a piece. The $5 went straight to non-profit that sold it and the contact got to shop with 25% off and enter to win a $500 Macy’s giftcard. Win-win! Additionally, HOH had their information displayed at the busiest entrance of the Hayden Run location. The Macy’s staff was excellent to work with and made the event more exciting with food, entertainment, and a Hawaiian-theme.
All in all, we had a good time and raised almost $300 for Haven of Hope. Can’t wait to do it again next year!

Drive FORE the Haven-SUCCESS!
We had a great group turn out for our 5th annual Drive FORE the Haven golf outing. The event was held at the prestigious Double Eagle Club in Galena. We lucked out with BEAUTIFUL (though slightly warm) weather.
Over $14,000 was raised for Haven of Hope AND we had a record number of sponsors participate.

Thank You StoneRidge Dental Care!
Local dental office, StoneRidge Dental Care in Gahanna, recently held a fundraiser to benefit Haven of Hope. The office offered head and neck cancer screenings to the local public for a $20 donation to the Haven. StoneRidge raised $850 and helped a lot of people took a step towards early detection and prevention of head and neck cancer.
